| What is NJROTC?
NJROTC stands for "Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps." It is a
full credit elective course offered for students who might be looking for
a different kind of elective or have an interest in any of the military
services or the scholarships they offer. NJROTC teaches self-discipline,
self-confidence, and leadership skills that can help you successfully meet
life's challenges whether you join the military, go on to college or go
directly into the job market.
It's at BHS!!!
The NJROTC Naval Science program at Bremerton High School has been around
since 1984. Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Doug Cook is the Senior Naval Science
Instructor at BHS. MSgt Janice Brooks is the Naval Science Instructor. The
unit will normally have about 10 percent of the student population
enrolled in NJROTC.
What is the BJH Club?
The BJH NJROTC club is meant to be a club for BJH eligible NJROTC cadets
(8th and 9th grade) to be involved with the BHS NJROTC program and to
learn about NJROTC in an informal setting at the BJH. Club members will
get priority in joining NJROTC and have the opportunity to earn rank and
team positions earlier than non-club members.
When does the Club Meet?
.
We plan to meet in the BJH cafeteria every Wednesday immediately after
school (2:00) and quit in time for club members to catch the activities
bus home.
What if I am in a Sport or other
Seasonal after school activity?
You can join after your sport or activity season is over. If you intend to
be involved with a future sport, you can join the club now and then be
excused during the sports season on a case by case basis.
What Will be Taught?
BHS second and third year cadets will teach several military oriented
subjects such as introduction to military drill, drill without arms
(no rifles), manual of arms with the NJROTC drill rifles, color guard,
orienteering, physical fitness and strength team competition, military
customs and traditions such as military time and NJROTC rates and ranks.
Throughout, strong emphasis is placed on leadership, personal honor,
self-reliance and self-discipline.
How about Uniforms and Books?
The purchase of a unit PT tee-shirt and NJROTC ball cap are required. All
books, and equipment for the course are furnished by the Navy, free of
charge to you. PT tee shirt and ball cap will be worn as directed by the
cadet staff. There is a nominal charge to purchase unit tee shirts and
ball caps. Unit sweat gear is not required to be purchased by club
members, however sweat gear will be a required purchase item when enrolled
in Naval Science classes at the high school. Top club cadets will be
issued a full set of NJROTC uniforms at no cost and be able to participate
in selected NJROTC activities.
Co-Curricular Activities?
BHS NJROTC has precision drill teams, color guards, orienteering teams and
more. Each of these activities allows BHS class enrolled cadets the
opportunity to earn a school varsity letter. In addition, social
activities include: the annual Navy ball, awards banquet, picnics, swim
parties, BBQ's and lots more. Top club cadets will be given the
opportunity to join in some of these events even though they may be in the
8th grade or are a preregistered Naval Science 9th grader.
Activities/Trips?
Normally, we will plan trips to military activities to enhance classroom
studies both in and outside Washington State. In addition, a select few
club members may be afforded a trip to high interest areas the cadets
choose each year. We may cruise aboard Navy or Coast Guard ships, tour
fleet ballistic missile submarines and more. Air transportation for these
trips is funded by the Navy, and we fly in military aircraft. Lodging and
meals will be paid for by the cadets and or the NJROTC Booster Club. Costs
are normally minimal.
Other Benefits?
NJROTC provides an excellent boost for those students desiring to compete
for military academy appointments or ROTC college scholarships. NJROTC
provides valuable preparation and a head start for students interested in
the military. Cadets enlisting after high school will be entered at a
higher pay grade in any of the military services upon successful
completion of boot camp.
The Community?
Navy JROTC highly encourages participation in community/school programs
and projects. Whether it's assisting the Red Cross with a blood drive,
raising funds for local charities, or visiting a nursing home to sing
Christmas Carols or march in local parades, it encourages civic
responsibility, and helps to develop strong and informed leaders for the
future. You will also learn to take great pride in your country, your
Navy, your uniform and YOURSELF.
How Many Years?
The BJH club does not earn any graduation credits. The Naval Science
course is designed as a four- year program at BHS. However, regular
graduation credit is given for each semester successfully completed.
Students must be enrolled for both semesters in order to hold a leadership
position of responsibility.
Who Is Eligible?
The only requirements are that you must be enrolled in BJH and be
physically able to participate in school Physical Education.
Who are the Instructors?
Instructor personnel are qualified second and third year cadets desiring
leadership responsibilities in the NJROTC unit.
How Do I Join?
Come to the club meeting or see your guidance counselor or the Naval
Science Instructors.
Where is the BJH Club Class?
We are located in the CJH cafeteria and will initially meet on Tuesdays
after school.
Booster Club Support?
The NJROTC Booster Club assists the unit financially by running unit fund
raisers so that many of the trips we take are very little cost to the
cadet. Booster club members/chaperones will also be required on all trips
and site visits. They are involved with promotion ceremonies, unit picnics
and other activities. Cost to the booster is some of her/his time. Booster
club membership is free and open to all BJH club members.
